40:0 Թէ մարդ չունի ինչ բարի յիւրմէ,
եւ չէ կարող պարծել յիրս ինչ:
| 40:0 MAN HAS NO GOOD IN HIMSELF AND CAN GLORY IN NOTHING:
| 40:1 Տէր, ո՞վ է մարդ, զի յիշես դու զնա. կամ որդի մարդոյ, թէ այց արասցես նմա. զի՞նչ արժանի է մարդ, թէ զշնորհ քո տացես նմա: Զիա՞րդ իշխիցեմ գանգատել, եթէ մերժես զիս. կամ զի՞նչ իրաւունք իցեն իմ ժտելոյ, եթէ զոր հայցեմն՝ չշնորհես: Ճշմարտութեամբ զայս ‘ի դէպ է ինձ խորհել եւ ասել. Տէր , ոչինչ եմ, ոչինչ իմիք զօրեմ, ոչինչ բարի յինէն ունիմ. այլ յամենայնէ յետնեալ եմ, եւ միշտ յոչինչ բերիմ: Եւ թէ ոչ ‘ի քէն օգնիմ եւ խելամտիմ, գլխովին գաղջանամ եւ ‘ի ցոփութիւն լուծանիմ:
| 40:1 LORD, what is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You visit him? What has man deserved that You should give him Your grace? What cause have I, Lord, to complain if You desert me, or what objection can I have if You do not do what I ask? This I may think and say in all truth: " Lord, I am nothing, of myself I have nothing that is good; I am lacking in all things, and I am ever tending toward nothing. And unless I have Your help and am inwardly strengthened by You, I become quite lukewarm and lax:
| 40:2 Այլ դու, տէր, միշտ նոյն ինքն ես, եւ կաս եւ մնաս յաւիտեան միշտ բարի, արդար, եւ սուրբ. զամենայն բարութեամբ արդարութեամբ եւ սրբութեամբ առնես, եւ իմաստութեամբ տնօրինես: Իսկ ես որ ‘ի պակասութիւն յաւէտ միտեմ, քան ‘ի յառաջադիմութիւն, ոչ միշտ կամ մնամ ‘ի նմին կայի, այլ եօթն ժամանակք փոխին ‘ի վերայ իմ: Սակայն եւ այնպէս վաղ յաջողէ ինձ ‘ի բարի, յորժամ հաճեսցիս եւ ձեռն տացես յօգնութիւն: Զի դու միայն առանց մարդկային ձեռնտուութեան կարող ես օգնել, եւ այնպէս կազդուրացուցանել, մինչ երեսաց իմոց ոչ եւս աստ անդ տատանիլ, այլ առ քեզ միայն դառնալ սրտի իմոյ եւ հանգչել:
| 40:2 But You, Lord, are always the same. You remain forever, always good, just, and holy; doing all things rightly, justly, and holily, disposing them wisely. I, however, who am more ready to go backward than forward, do not remain always in one state, for I change with the seasons. Yet my condition quickly improves when it pleases You and when You reach forth Your helping hand. For You alone, without human aid, can help me and strengthen me so greatly that my heart shall no more change but be converted and rest solely in You:
| 40:3 Վասն այսորիկ եթէ քաջ գիտէի զամենայն մարդկային մխիթարութիւն մերժել յանձնէ, եթէ վասն եռանդն ստանալոյ, եւ եթէ վասն հարկի քեզ ‘ի խնդիր լինելոյ, առ ‘ի չգոյէ այլոյ՝ որ մխիթարիցէ զիս, յայնժամ իշխէի իրաւամբք յուսալ ‘ի շնորհս քո, եւ ընդ պարգեւ նորոյ մխիթարութեանն ուրախ լինել:
| 40:3 Hence, if I knew well how to cast aside all earthly consolation, either to attain devotion or because of the necessity which, in the absence of human solace, compels me to seek You alone, then I could deservedly hope for Your grace and rejoice in the gift of new consolation:
| 40:4 Շնորհ ունիմ զքէն, յորմէ գայ ամենայն՝ որ ինչ յաջողէ ինձ ‘ի բարի: Այլ ես ունայն եմ եւ չնչին առաջի քո, այր մի յողդողդ եւ տկար: Արդ յի՞նչ պարծիցիմ, կամ զիա՞րդ ըղձանայցեմ մեծարգի լինել: Թերեւս ընդ չքութիւն իմ. եւ ահա ընդունայնութիւն է: Ապաքէն սնափառութիւն ժանտախտ է եւ ունայնութիւն մեծ. զի ‘ի ճշմարիտ փառաց վրիպեցուցանէ, եւ յերկնային շնորհաց կողոպտէ: Զի ‘ի լինել մարդոյ հաճոյ յաչս անձին, անհաճոյ լինի քեզ. եւ յանձկալ մարդկային գովութեանց՝ զրկի ‘ի ճշմարիտ առաքինութեանց:
| 40:4 Thanks be to You from Whom all things come, whenever it is well with me. In Your sight I am vanity and nothingness, a weak, unstable man. In what, therefore, can I glory, and how can I wish to be highly regarded? Is it because I am nothing? This, too, is utterly vain. Indeed, the greatest vanity is the evil plague of empty self- glory, because it draws one away from true glory and robs one of heavenly grace. For when a man is pleased with himself he displeases You, when he pants after human praise he is deprived of true virtue:
| 40:5 Այլ ճշմարիտ պարծանք եւ ցնծութիւն սուրբ է պարծել ‘ի քեզ, եւ ոչ յանձն. խնդալ յանուն քո, եւ ոչ յիւր զօրութիւն. եւ ոչ ուրախ լինել յարարած ինչ, բայց միայն վասն քո: Գովեսցի անուն քո, եւ ոչ իմ. մեծ եղիցին գործք քո, եւ ոչ իմ. օրհնեսցի անուն սուրբ քո, եւ ինձ մի՛ ինչ ընծայեսցի ‘ի մարդկային գովութեանց: Դու փառք իմ, դու ցնծութիւն սրտի իմոյ. ‘ի քեզ պարծեցայց եւ ցնծացայց զօրհանապազ. այլ վասն անձին ինձ ոչ պարծեցայց, բայց եթէ ‘ի տկարութիւնս իմ:
| 40:5 But it is true glory and holy exultation to glory in You and not in self, to rejoice in Your name rather than in one' s own virtue, and not to delight in any creature except for Your sake. Let Your name, not mine, be praised. Let Your work, not mine, be magnified. Let Your holy name be blessed, but let no human praise be given to me. You are my glory. You are the joy of my heart. In You I will glory and rejoice all the day, and for myself I will glory in nothing but my infirmities:
| 40:6 Խնդրեսցեն Հրէայք փառս զառ ‘ի միմեանց. ես զփառս խնդրեցից զառ ‘ի միոյն Աստուծոյ: Ամենայն փառք մարդկային, ամենայն պատիւ ժամանակեան, ամենայն բարձրութիւն աշխարհական, առ յաւիտենական քո փառօք՝ ունայնութիւն է եւ անմտութիւն: Ո՛ ճշմարտութիւն եւ ողորմութիւն իմ, Աստուած իմ, երրորդութիւն սուրբ, քեզ միայնոյ գովութիւն, պատիւ, զօրութիւն եւ փառք յանսպառ յաւիտեանս յաւիտենից:
| 40:6 Let the Jews seek the glory that comes from another. I will seek that which comes from God alone. All human glory, all temporal honor, all worldly position is truly vanity and foolishness compared to Your everlasting glory. O my Truth, my Mercy, my God, O Blessed Trinity, to You alone be praise and honor, power and glory, throughout all the endless ages of ages:
