Speech in Memory of Tserents by Hovhannes Tumanian

The Association of Armenian Writers on May 26, 1913 held a commemoration service at the Khojivank cemetery on the occasion of 25th anniversary of death of Tserents. Hovhannes Tumanyan gave this speech at Tserents’s grave. The speech was published in the Horizon Daily on May 27, 1913, Issue No 115.

In our recent literary history, Tserents is renowned as the founder of the Armenian historical novel. And when we look back toward the 1860s to understand who this founding luminary was our hearts are filled with earnest joy. One does not know whether to admire his freedom-loving spirit, or to marvel at his bright patriotism and his love for people, or to rejoice at the honesty and purity of his soul or to cheer at the tenderness of his heart and the refinement of his taste.

And how wisely and beautifully does he choose his hero Toros Levoni – the Armenian prince held captive in a Byzantine prison, who escapes and returns to his homeland where he inspires the people, encourages them, rouses them and empowers them to stand firmly on their own two feet to live free.

Thus, he is a symbol of the freedom-loving spirit of the Armenian people; the spirit that reigns in Armenian literature drawing on the history and current affairs, which is strengthened and fortified through the people’s will and which raises up heroes through noble aspirations.

The Association of Armenian Writers today has come with flowers and has graced the Tserents’s grave on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death.

Still, those flowers are inconsequential decoration on his immense tomb. The merit of today’s event is the expression of our feelings. These cannot further adorn his tomb, since it is already adorned with his unfading talent, love for his people and purity, and with sublime virtues of a great writer and truthful man. And we have not come here to elevate him through our ceremony and speeches, but have come to be elevated ourselves by remembering him.

Thus, blessed be the memory of those who after breathing life and spirit into people during their lifetimes, continue to ennoble and elevate people and nations through their deeds after their deaths.

Խոսք Ծերենցի մասին

1913 թ․ մայիսի 26-ին Հայ գրողների ընկերությունը Թիֆլիսի Խոջիվանքի գերեզմանատանը Ծերենցի մահվան 25-ամյակի առթիվ կատարում է հոգեհանգիստ։ Թումանյանը այս խոսքն ասել է Ծերենցի գերեզմանի վրա։ Տպագրվել է «Հորիզոն» թերթում, 1913, մայիսի 27, N 115։

Հայոց նորագույն գրականության պատմությունն ասում է՝ Ծերենցը եղավ մեր նոր պատմական վիպագրության հիմնադիրը։ Եվ երբ ետ եք դառնում դեպի 60-ական թվականները՝ ճանաչելու՝ թե ո՞վ էր էդ հիմնադիր վարպետը— ձեր սիրտը լցվում է անկեղծ հրճվանքով։ Չգիտեք նրա ազատասեր ոգու վրա հիանաք, նրա վառ հայրենասիրության ու ժողովրդասիրության վրա զարմանաք, նրա հոգու ազնվության մաքրության վրա ուրախանաք, թե նրա սրտի քնքշության ու ճաշակի նրբության վրա։

Եվ ի՜նչ իմաստուն ու գեղեցիկ է դնում նա իր գործի հիմքը՝ իրեն հերոս առնելով Թորոս Լևոնին, բյուզանդական բանտում փակված հայ իշխանազնը, որ բանտից դուրս փախչելով, հասնում է իր հայրենիքը ազատասիրության շունչ է փչում, սիրտ տալիս, ոտքի է հանում իր ժողովրդին ու կանգնեցնում է ամուր՝ իր ազատ կյանքով ապրելու։

Էսպեսով նա հանդիսանում է մի խորհրդանշան— հայ ժողովրդի ազատասիրության ոգին, մի ոգի, որ թագավորում է հայոց թե պատմական, թե ժամանակակից կյանքի վրա հիմնած գրականության մեջ և զորանում ու ամրանում է ժողովրդական ուժով՝ հերոսական խորհուրդներից հերոսներ ծնելով։

Հայոց Գրողների Ընկերությունը էսօր եկել է ծաղիկներով ու զարդարել Ծերենցի գերեզմանը նրա մահվան 25-ամյակի առիթով։

Սակայն էս ծաղիկները չնչին զարդեր են նրա մեծ շիրմի համար։ Սրանց բոլոր արժանիքն էն է, որ մեր զգացմունքների արտահայտությունն են էսօր։ Սրանցով չպիտի զարդարվի նրա շիրիմը, մի շիրիմ, որ զարդարված է տաղանդի, ժողովրդասիրության ու մաքրության անթառամ զարդերով, թե լավ գրողի, թե ազնիվ մարդու վսեմ առաքինություններով։ Եվ մենք չենք եկել մեր հանդեսով ու ճառերով նրան բարձրացնելու, այլ եկել ենք՝ նրան հիշելով՝ նրանով բարձրանալու։

Եվ թո՛ղ օրհնված լինի նրանց հիշատակը, որոնք իրենց կենդանության օրով ժողովուրդներին կյանք և շունչ տալուց հետո էլ՝ չեն դադարում իրենց գործերով ու գերեզմաններով էլ ազնվացնելու և բարձրացնելու մարդկանց ու ժողովուրդներին։

Թող օրհնված լինի Ծերենցի հիշատակը։
