Set in the 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, it tells the story of the Armenian national-liberation movement in Cilicia from Byzantine domination during the Crusades.\u00a0 The main character of the novel is a real historical figure, Toros II the Great of the Rubinian princely family. Toros, together with his father Leo I and his brother Ruben, was taken captive and imprisoned in Constantinople in 1137 by the Byzantine Emperor John II Comnenus. Unlike his father and brother, Toros survived his incarceration in Constantinople and escaped in 1143. Returning to Cilicia he successfully liberated and restored the Armenian state of Cilicia.
