These related words are called\u00a0<strong>cogn<\/strong>ates. Cognates usually have similar consonants, or the consonants exhibit a regular correspondence, e.g.,\u00a0<strong><em>h<\/em><\/strong><em>ayr\u00a0<\/em><strong>f<\/strong>ather\u00a0<strong>p<\/strong>ater,\u00a0<strong><em>h<\/em><\/strong><em>ats\u00a0<\/em><strong>f<\/strong>ood\u00a0<strong>p<\/strong>asture.
