These related words are called\u00a0<strong>cogn<\/strong>ates. Cognates usually have similar consonants, or the consonants exhibit a regular correspondence, e.g.,\u00a0<strong><em>h<\/em><\/strong><em>ayr\u00a0<\/em><strong>f<\/strong>ather\u00a0<strong>p<\/strong>ater,\u00a0<strong><em>h<\/em><\/strong><em>ats\u00a0<\/em><strong>f<\/strong>ood\u00a0<strong>p<\/strong>asture. Armenian often loses letters, as in\u00a0<strong><em>l<\/em><\/strong><em>i\u00a0<\/em>fu<strong>ll\u00a0<\/strong>p<strong>l<\/strong>enty,\u00a0<em>ye<strong>re<\/strong>k\u00a0<\/em>th<strong>re<\/strong>e, and sometimes sounds change quite dramatically and uniquely, as in\u00a0<strong><em>dzn<\/em><\/strong><em>unt\u00a0<\/em><strong>kin\u00a0<\/strong><strong>gen<\/strong>eration,\u00a0<strong><em>dzan<\/em><\/strong><em>ot\u00a0<\/em><strong>kn<\/strong>ow pro<strong>gn<\/strong>osis,\u00a0<strong><em>medz\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong>meg<\/strong>a, or\u00a0<strong><em>k<\/em><\/strong><em>aghtsr\u00a0<\/em><strong>sw<\/strong>eet,\u00a0<strong><em>k<\/em><\/strong><em>uyr\u00a0<\/em><strong>s<\/strong>ister\u00a0<strong>so<\/strong>rority.
